Description

Workshop Aims

Performance Appraisals provide an opportunity to review and discuss performance against last year’s objectives, agree the objectives for the coming year; review competencies required and create a development plan for the coming year.  It is about discussing, acknowledging and showing recognition for performance and achievements along with discussing areas of improvement and development.   When appraisals are managed and conducted well they become motivating for the staff member.  This programme is designed to give the participants the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes required to effectively prepare and conduct staff appraisals.

Workshop Objectives

By the end of the programme you will

  • Recognise the benefits of preparing for and conducting motivating appraisals to guide progress, increase productivity and employee satisfaction

  • Be able to discuss key success factors and how to achieve them

  • Know how to prepare for appraisal meetings effectively and manage the conversation

  • Have practiced the necessary skills for conducting effective appraisals and developed your action plan

Workshop Format

The programme will be highly participative and include discussions, exercises and practice to address the objectives.  The participants will be encouraged to interact and discuss the relevant areas to ensure that knowledge and skills are developed.

Workshop Content

  • Introduction and course objectives: Explore participants’ experiences of performance appraisals covering the benefits of the appraisal meeting.   Discussions will lead into identifying the ideal outcomes, tangible and intangible, along with concerns and difficulties the participants might experience in achieving these outcomes.

  • Preparation for the meeting:  This section will include

    • The importance of preparation for both the appraiser and appraisee; how to prepare effectively using the appraisal forms; how to structure the meeting; how to give feedback constructively

    • How to avoid common appraisal errors through effective preparation

    • How to open the meeting to encourage open discussions; manage different behaviours; how to close the meeting

    • Managing other concerns that the participants raised at the start of the course

  • During the meetings: This section will discuss the importance of recognising accomplishments; listening to understand, asking questions and awareness of body language; creating a supportive versus a defensive environment; using competency framework and inquiring questions to invite self-appraisal; focusing on performance and not personality; developing personal development plan.

  • Skill development: As many people are very apprehensive about conducting performance appraisals short mock-appraisals will be conducted with the participants using your appraisal documents.  The mock-appraisals will be debriefed and following this the participants will discuss their learning’s and how they will develop the skills required to ensure consistency of approach.
